The Riverwood estate’s 994 units occupy around 30 ha south of the M5 motorway. It was built on a former US military hospital from the 1950s to 1970s. The planned redevelopment of this estate is another ‘Communities Plus’ project, involving demolition and construction of 1000-1200 ‘social’ dwellings and 2900 private homes. This follows the redevelopment of a small section of the estate in the 2010s, now named Washington Park, which is now similarly 70% private housing. The fate of Riverwood under the Minns Government is unknown, following the rejection of the initial redevelopment proposal by the Department of Planning and Environment in 2022.
