The Cowper Street estate redevelopment was the first project targeting Glebe’s 1980s infill apartment complexes, built following Tom Uren’s post-Green Ban vision for the area. It first involved demolition of 134 public homes along the east side of Cowper St — replaced by 153 community, 250 private and 90 affordable homes in their place. This was followed by demolition of the complexes on the opposite side of Cowper St (17-31 Cowper St and 2A-2D Wentworth Park Road) – their 19 public homes to be replaced by 75 community housing homes in 2025. This second development only became 100% social housing after a campaign led by Hands Off Glebe.
